Am considering driving around Wales for a couple of weeks, stopping off as and when the mood or interest takes me. Will probably start in Cardiff and work my way around and up country. Is there anywhere I should not miss, sights, pubs et.

The internet is packed with great reviews for this pub:

Listed as one of the world's top 10 beach bars:

Rhossilli Bay and sunset over Worms Head
Where do you expect me to start David !

I wouldn't miss Pembrokeshire and St Davids. The Brecon Beacons look marvelous at this time of the year, and the Gower Peninsula is wonderful.

Go to Big Pit, in Blaenavon, and go down a real coal mine, in a cage with a miners helmet on !

If I don't stop here, I will be late for work !
To add to Jakes post, you can stay at this Hotel in Rhossili ::::

One of the best views from your bedroom window that you are ever likely to see in Britain ! Can't recommend it highly enough.
After Cardiff. A visit to Castle Coch Then on to Caerphilly birth place of Tommy Cooper and Caerphilly castle, famous enough for its leaning tower. 2nd largest in area in Europe. And birth place of Malcome Uphill. TT motorbike racer first person to lap Isle of Man at 100mph unofficial record.
The Mumbles Peninsula, outside Swansea.

Portmeirion in the north west, where The Prisoner was filmed.
Drive North through the middle, via the Elan Valley, stunning
The hotel at Celtic Manor is nice.
Can thoroughly agree with Chris' recommendation for Ty Coch Inn at Morfa Nefyn. We rented a cottage for quite a few years at the other end of the beach (it's seen in one of the views on that website) and virtually lived in the pub or on the splendid golf course that you have to drive through to get from town to beach. Wasn't half dark trying to stagger back along the beach though.
Excellent part of the the world.
Good shout Prudie; I was going to suggest that as well.
There's also a number of red kite feeding stations, depending upon your route.
