I'm off to New York on 19th May, need to buy a few dollars to get me over the first day or so, any advice on whether I should buy them before or after the General Election, heard some say that its best to wait, ideas please?

The pound will be very volatile as the election approaches, then is expected to drop if there is a hung parliament, then possibly recover quite strongly once a Government is formed - but that might take a while. In your position I'd watch the rates over the next few days and try to buy when there is an 'up'. As factor says, any variation in rate will probably be less...

If it's only a few dollars I don't think it's worth worrying about whether rates will go up or down. You just need to find the one with lowest charges. We always find the Post Office and M&S are good for smallish transactions

As factor says, any variation in rate will probably be less important than finding the best deal for commission.
Try the Post Office.

Thanks everyone, will keep an eye on it over the next few days.
My sis goes to the US a lot and says that the best rate she ever finds (and she searches, believe me) is at M and S, especially of you are a card holder

To be honest I really don't think that you will be buying so many dollars that a few cents movement is going to make a lot if difference.
