We used a pre-paid credit card, they seem to be recommended for America.
You may find it cheaper to organise the car over here. When you are standing at their counter in Florida your bargaining powers are weak. You may still be asked for a credit card on collection.

Thanks for replys. I am planning on paying for a fly drive over here from the travel agents. Some people have said a debit card is ok but am unsure
Are you aware lauragreen1 that a credit card is much safer than a debit card because you are covered by the credit card company against fraud, & if you use your debit card the cash is being deducted straight from your bank account. Cash is rarely used in the U/S, last time I went stateside I used credit card & then paid on my return to U/K it saves carrying a lot of cash about or travellers cheques.
