What's he looking for? A beach holiday or, perhaps, a bit of culture?

If he wants sunshine he'll have to head well south (probably to the Canaries). If it's culture (+ superb restaurants and bars and lots to do) somewhere like Barcelona might be a good place to go. (Madrid is a fantastic city to explore as well).

The destination map here might help
http://www.london-luton.co.uk/en/destinationmap/
but it's possibly easier to look at the list of destinations served from Luton using Wikipedia:

ta for some replies
it has to .be a sunshine place
Your friend needs to be aware that to get a 'hot' holiday he'd need to go well south into Africa (e.g. The Gambia) or consider long-haul destinations (such as Australia). None of those are cheap (although The Gambia isn't mega-expensive) and they're probably unrealistic for just a 10-day break because of the time spent travelling. Further, such destinations aren't served directly from Luton.

The warmest places he can get to cheaply and quickly are in the Canary Islands. For example it's usually around 20C by day in January in Lanzarote:

As an example, he could fly out on Sunday 11/01 and back on Wednesday 21/01 for around £72 return with Ryanair:

Transfers shouldn't cost too much:

and there are loads of cheap, but good hotels:

Gran Canaria.
I went to The Gambia one year. Worst place I have EVER been. Absolutely hated the place. Fortunately I was only there for a week but that was more than enough.
The plane coming back was full of folks with the old Gambia Gut or Banjul Belly problems. Nice !!
Gambia is too close to the Ebola area for many people to consider it as an option.
Tenerife is good, 4>1/2 Flights.
Tenerife will be nice in Jan.
Dec is the worst month, but it's still low to mid 20's deg C .... we've just booked for our 6th consecutive Xmas there.
If he does decide to go to Tenerife, tell him to head to the south (Playa Las Americas; Costa Adeje; Los Cristianos .... etc) as the north is generally a lot cloudier.
We are in the Columbas for a week in Dec Giz, P. De. Americas
We're in Costa Adeje 13th - 27th Dec.
We might cross paths and never even know .... assuming you're there the same time as me :)
Madeira?
We are there the 22nd>>29th, have a good one.
Jordan has everything, culture, beach, snorkelling and great weather
