Set the traps last night and as I left the room one was triggered. It had caught either a giant mouse or a young rat just across the snout. It wriggled about for a while before it suffocated. Anybody recommend a humane trap?

I only know of the ones that catch them in a box but then you have to decide what to do with a live rat/mouse. I know you want rid of them but it would be better if they could be killed instantly without suffering.
no, they are horrible things, poison is best. as long as you have it in the house, and no pets.
12 bore ?
pest control officer said don't catch them then let them out into the garden, or anywhere outside, they simply come back. you have to eradicate mice, unless you want them to run riot. we had them for months, the noise, scratching and the filthy mess of faeces they leave will have you tearing your hair out.

I'd never use poison again. Years ago I lived in a flat in an old house that was overrun with rats. I'd put poison down and they come out in the middle of the day and sit in full view. I had to dispatch them with a shovel.
Not something I'd want to do again.
there is no humane way to kill them - from the pest control officers own lips, he put poison down and they were eradicated, at least for now. and if you had them in your kitchen in areas of food preparation you will find the first thing to hand to kill it, i managed to kill three one with a broom the other two got drowned as they had got into the bath, not remotely amusing either, it's a vile business but i would never put up with that ever again

Maybe if I tidied up a bit and made my home a cold house for rodents they'd go away.
Never use poison... we have mice in the barn and when cold weather sets in some try to migrate to the house. We use the single, 'snap to latch' traps baited with just a little peanut butter. Some friends elected to use the box with the super sticky paper without thinking about what you do with the critters once they've stepped into it... bad choice.

Look, a mouses brain is about the size of 1/16th the end of your little finger... they react to stimulus and are creatures of habit and learn to avoid repetitive dangers... other than that they aren't terribly smart and are practically useless. In sandy's case, I would have moved the trap to the barn and let the barn cats have a moments amusement. Lacking a barn or cats, don a leather glove, remove the vermin and administer a quick knock on the head. End of drama...
nothing to do with the cold, to do with free food, and they can squeeze into the smallest space, you may not know either where they drop their faeces,
and to say they are a pest in the home is an understatement, the noise of chewing, scratching, and whatever nocturnal activities they get up to will drive you insane.
tried peanut butter, and chocolate another tip, and indeed sticky traps and box trap which the pest control guy put down, nothing worked, and sorry but if you have them in the house as we did, poison was the only thing that got rid, it happened because some workman had disturbed a colony in someone's basement and they ran riot through a large swathe of the homes in our street.
Have you considered keeping a pet python ?
or a cat
Hmmm that's not so humane, being a toy.
Mice aren't useless, they are a food source for many larger animals. The problems arise when humans come on the scene and an excess of food and shelter imbalances nature.
Also, other animals that eat rats and mice can be poisoned if you poison the mice. Cats are notorious for bringing them in. Dogs scare them away. Borrow one!

I have a dog so borrowing a cat is out of the question. And the dog couldn't catch a cold. It'll have to be traps, I suppose.
Wow two birds with one stone ! Get rid of your rat and cat problem in one. Epic.
No. Cats make it worse, sandy. They catch them outside and let them go in the house. Borrow a dog for an hour. It doesn't have to catch anything, it'll just scare the mice away.
We had a mouse problem years ago. Never seen one after the dog arrived (and he wouldn't hurt anything!)
