Isit true you get a higher baggage allowance (weight) if you go to NZ via the USA than say, for example, Hong Kong/Singapore?

Baggage allowance rules vary from one airline to another so (and between classes of travel, as well as across different routes), unless you tell us which airline(s) you're referring to, your question is effectively meaningless.

Well, It completely depends on airlines and class like what class you are traveling in. If you want to take extra baggage that will cost you extra. It is approx estimate: 30 kg in Economy Class
40 kg in Business Class
50 kg in First Class
