A lot of tourist area taxis have fixed fares between destinations - use a liscensed cab and ask for the fare before you get in - you don;t want to be haggling at the other end.

If you want to avoid being ripped off eating out, head off the tourist drag and look for the places crowded with locals - that's where you will find good food at reasonable prices. Always ask if they have a 'Menu del dia' - the menu of the day, which they don't always advertise, but will offer if you ask. You'll get a starter, main and desert and a drink for an all-in, usually very good, price.

have fun!
I find that the street one behind the main drag is the best value and ofter with more authentic food (if that's what your after).

If you ask for a 'Menu del dia' in PN you'll probably get some bloke from Kent asking "Wot's that mate?"
I would say the same as ladybird49 and join tripadvisor you will get many more answers on there. As for the taxi's they all go on the meter but it doesn't hurt to ask the driver and most will give you a good idea of the cost. It will cost around 22 euro's from PN to Palma marina, got one myself a couple of months ago. Most places will not rip you off for food and drink, most have a price list and many have the price list outside. There are only a few that seem to be very expensive and those on Tripadvisor would know the names of them.
Avoid any restaurant that has a 'catcher' outside who tries to grab you and pull you in. As others have said avoid the main drag - even just one street back from the busy sea front restaurants will make a difference, as they have to make more of an effort.
If your Spanish is any good, or you have a decent phrase book, avoid those places with plastic menus and large pictures of the dishes served.
See if you can get chatting to any of the Spanish staff at your hotel or apartment block and ask them where they eat.
Finally, many restaurants charge different amounts depending if you are sitting in the nice outside seats in the sun or inside at the bar. And yes, thoroughly advise checking out TripAdvisor.
If you fancy a good authentic meal go to Caan Pedros, just above Portals Nous (next town to Palma Nova, about 10 euros in a taxi). You get a cloakroom ticket to denote your order in the wait for a table, eat at long trestle tables and copious amounts of local beer are sunk.

If you fancy ""death by meat" go to El Cibos in the main street in Santa Ponsa (next town in the opposite direction).

There are a few local restaurants in the back streets behind the hotel (can't remember the name) at the far end of the town (opposite end to Magaluf).

The boundary between Magaluf and Palma Nova is not distinct. Do not wander into Magaluf, do not pass Go, do not collect 200 euros (enough for two or three beers in that Godforsaken hole).
LOL NJ I agree Magaluf is a bit noiser than Palma Nova and the dividing line is not clear. However Palma Nova is OK, I think the taxi fares are standard. Majorca is a lovely island, hope you have a lovely time.

Don't think there is a dividing line these days between the 2 askyourgran, the strip seems to join the 2 of them. This time I did stay in Maga and yes it was noisy at times probably wouldn't stay in Maga again much prefer Santa Ponsa. As for prices it was cheaper in Maga than PN and a nice pint in the Piano Bar opposite end to strip and very civilized cost 2 euros so would get many for my 200 for passing go and there are many places a lot cheaper than this. It is a lovely island to visit, many places to see and the public transport is quite cheap and good.
Beware of exchange offices advertising better than normal rates. They advertise no commission, but argue its a service charge when you get your money. There use to be one of these offices opposite the Showbar pub in Palma Nova.
If you order wine with a meal, refuse the bottle if its brought to your table already opened.
Can reccomend The bar Andaluz on main road Magaluf and Tonys bar opposite police station Magaluf.
