Mexican destinations

We are considering visiting Mexico. I once read of a place where one could more or less walk from a rersort into tropical forest with ancient ruins, so long ago that I can't remember what it was called or if I am now grossly distorting what was described. Would anyone care to suggest something/somewhere that gives the opportunity of something unusual (not just the beach, please, unless it just happens to be there as well) in addition to relaxation. Another thing I am interested in learning about is surface or air travel to such destinations from Mexico city where we would likely arrive in the country.

Think Acapulco is worth visiting although not had chance to go. Believe it can be reached from Mexico City. I spent 6 nights in the City with a group of Girl Guides in 2002 before heading off to the Guide Centre in the north of the country. I remember we climbed a pyramid, that was quite an achievement. I'll try and remember where we went.
Sorry should have said South of the City where the Guide Centre is. We also went on a gondola around the floating gardens and visited a bull fighting arena, (not that there was any fighting, but the bulls were there) - not into bull fighting. Don't know anything about night life as being with a group of children we were in at night time. Really good experience though.
