Northern Rail - still on steam?

I'm travelling up to Whitehaven in Cumbria on Monday. Looking at the ticket it takes 3 hours from London to Lancaster then another 3 hours from Lancaster to Whitehaven.

I'm not sure of the distance between Lancaster & Whitehaven but it seems a hell of a long journey. Why such a slow run?

You can get to Whitehaven from Euston in under 5 hours.

I bought a cheap ticket Craft :-( Maybe I get on the wrong train by accident :-)
It does seem to take a long time on the last leg. You can get the 200 miles to York in under 2 hours, but York to Whitehaven is four and a half...............
Have you thought of travelling upto Carlisle, then to Whitehaven??

Will check into how flexible my tickets are. As I pre-purchased them and they're for Virgin trains I imagine I'm tied down to that one service provider.

Looking at the route the train takes it is quite a long winded journey. Oh well I'll see parts of the UK I've never seen before!
If you have bought an off peak return (£106.25) then it's valid on any off peak service regardless of operator

If you have bought advance singles then they are only valid on the booked trains. They vary in price from £16.50 to £111.50.
