There are no direct flights from Baltimore/Washington International to any destination outside of the Americas. Source: http://www.bwiairport.com/airlines_schedules/n onstop_flights/

That means that you will need to find a suitable point to change flights. You can view a list of cities in the Americas, with direct flights to Narita International Airport (Tokyo), here: http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/travelplan/oag /page_4.html

There's a list of all airlines flying into Narita International here:
http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/travelplan/oag /page_5.html

Putting those pages together suggests that American Airlines might be able to provide a suitable route. (i.e. they fly out of Baltimore/Washington and into Tokyo). Looking at their website (and choosing a random date and time for the flight search) gives a shortest journey time of 16 hours 30 minutes (including a 1 hour 45 minute layover at Chicago).

I think Chris has said something he did not mean to - he is usually such a good authority on this sort of thing. There are definitely flights from BWI to international destinations outside the Americas. For a start, BA fly between there and Heathrow (both directions) and would take someone to Japan if asked (and paid), but it would not be a direct flight and it would be a bit of "the wrong way round".

Karl is correct. I failed to spot 'London' in the list of destinations in that first link above. It's the only non-American destination served directly from BWI.

However, as Karl points out, it's not a logical connection point for flights to Japan (since westward travel would seem to be more logical). So, despite my error, my original answer remains valid with regard to the flight time.
