Don't they have direct flights from Aus to Cuba? I've been from here to Bogota - no prob at all.

Well one option would be to check with your local travel agent as they would know the details. This would be better than relying on hearsay.
Also, have you had a look at any flights yourself? I have had a look on lastminute.com.aus and they have flights to Havana via either the States or the Far East.

If you're travelling out of BNE, are you planning to travel via the states first, or are you taking the flights via AKL, then into Santiago? If so, you can fly from Santiago to Havannah, or you could travel from Bogota or Mexico City. Alternatively, you could travel through the states to Trinidad & Tobago, then purchase a return ticket from Trinidad to Havannah. But you are right, there is not a direct service from the US to Cuba..(unless you're an alleged terrorist!). American's, as I recall, are actually banned by their government from going there. There are scheduled flights from Toronto and Montreal to Havannah as well.
Bon journey

Don't know if this helps any, but last year I flew BNE-SYD-AKL-SCL(Santiago)-MEX.(Mexico City) It was a combined round-the-world with the Oneworld Alliance. But I had to purchase a separate ticket from MEX-HAV-MEX. As I recall, I paid USD$158 for the MEX-HAV-MEX sectors. I then continued on AA from MEX into the states, then on to the UK. If it might help, there's a RTW planner with Oneworld at:

Best of luck!
