New National Bus Pass -over 60s - April 2008
Would it be possible to travel from Lands End to John O'Groats using a network of 'local' qualifying buses? It is my understanding that longer distance inter-town/city buses are not eligible.

Hello there trastevere,
You raise an interesting point, and one(since I am 61) that applies to me as well.
From what I can see on the Governments own site, the free over 6o's travel arrangements only apply to what could be called"local bus services" and not anything(such as Stagecoach etc) that could be classed as long distance coaches.
Of course it MAY be possible to get linking buses from Carlisle to Dover, but as a journey(according to TransportDirect Website) on a Stagecoach service takes 10 or 11 hours,I don't think a "bus service" on the same route would be viable.
However,this site:~
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/regional/buses/conce ssionary/concessionmarketingcoms/nationalbuspa sstoolkit/listoftcas
List all the Concessionary Bus Pass Providers in England,so you might just be able to see if you can plan a longer than normal journey?
This may be of interest too:~
What does the new pass entitle you to?
You are already entitled to the current statutory minimum concession of free local bus travel in your area from 9.30 am to 11.00 pm on Monday to Friday and at any time during weekends and public holidays - and this will continue. From 1 April 2008 you will also get free local bus travel in all other areas of England during these off-peak times.
Local authorities may offer extra benefits to their residents as part of their concessionary scheme – for example, free or reduced off-peak tram or rail travel, or free bus travel before 9.30 am Monday to Friday.
However, these additional benefits will normally only be available to that region’s own residents. So if you visit an area that offers additional services, you probably won’t be entitled to them – make sure you check first with the relevant authority.

The answer is yes - I'm sure it is possible using a series of local buses. It will probably take several days though and there could be the need to go the long way round in some areas.
And Stagecoach run local buses in many areas of the country on which the passes are valid. In a pickle is confusing them with National Express

I see that there are a couple of ladies travelling from Berwick-On-Tweed to Lands End using their new bus passes. They reckon it will take them 12 days!

A Guardian journalist and his pensioner father travelled from Penzance (Lands End wouldn't have been much of a problem) to Carlisle in 4 days - report in today's edition.
