Where's a good place to go in August?

I am looking for somewhere to go on holiday to for the last two weeks in August with my boyfriend. We're looking for somewhere which is hot but not too hot to move, not too touristy (not a package), pref by the sea but with things to do not just beach and good food. We'd quite like the idea of going to two or three places over the two weeks - maybe a city and then relaxing on beach. Problem is everywhere I read about says avoid July and August as too crowded and expensive. Any ideas?

It all depends on whether you want to travel far, whether you want to drive etc. I have heard that northern Spain is good - not too hot and crowded but with combination of interesting towns and beautiful coast. I have never tried it though. Car ferries go from plymouth and portsmouth and there are some budget flights to ?Bilbao.

Do you have to go in August when it is busy and expensive. Why not wait until mid-September when there won't be any kids around. It shoud be a bit cooler as well. Cyprus is nice in September.

Newquay is good, it depends where you are in relation to newquay, september may be better as it could be cheaper and no kids around

Try the Turquoise Coast of Turkey - Chalis Beach, Fethiye, Olu Deniz. Chalis Beach is still relatively uncommercialised and cheaper than Fethiye or Olu Deniz.

Flying time to Dalaman from Gatwick or Luton is four hours. If you book hotel in advance they may also include airport pick up both ways. A small and very pleasant family run Hotel in Chalis beach is Hotel Letoon - www.hotelletoon.com - only five metres from the beach and blue sea. Great fun - have been there three times and want to go back again and again.

I know this isn't exactly what you had in mind but hear me out. Go to Edinburgh, Scotland between August 3 - 25th for the Festival Fringe. The city is hoping with life, it is the largest performing arts festival in the world, the streets are filled with performers doing their thing. stay in hostels, or rent an apartment. The food is great, the pubs swing until 3am and the city is alive!! Go to the website www.edfringe.com

Hope to see you there!

With road tax hikes hitting those with 2001-2006 registered cars, would you consider selling up and buying a pre-2001 model to escape the the tax mans wrath?

Yes

No

The hikes don't really bother me
