OK, what's happened is the first time you tried to open the excel document your computer has decided it's a archive (a zip file basically) and is now trying to open it as such.

If you go back to the folder you saved the xlsx file in and then right click on it and select open with, then choose default program, then from the list that comes up find and select excel,...

Incidentally... anyone that has MS Office prior to version 2007 should install the above as a matter of course.
ChickFickens, you are always so kind and helpful. Thanks for that tip.

Have done download but still can nnot open it. :0(
enfable, can you "save as", or convert to, a 97-2003 Excel document? - I have this trouble often as I have 2007 but nobody else does, I have to convert to the old version so other people can read it.
You state that you've downloaded the file but have you actually run it?
(See the 'Instructions' section in Chuck's link).
Also:
If you still can't open the xlsx file, ask the person who sent it to you to re-save it, using 'Save As > Excel 97-2003 Workbook'. Then he'll be able to send you an xls file, which you'll be able to open.

Still struggling.

I have ran the program, the only option I have is 'save target as' and it only offers me a 'compressed (zipped) folder' this is what I have saved.

When I go to open it gives me several folders inside which are several documents, I have tried opening all of these but to no avail.

The document was e-mailed to me by someone who was at work and they will not be availble until next week, so I can not get them to reformat it.

Just tyo clarify I have ran and installed the download.

The 'save target as' is when I try opening the e-mail teh document is in.

Hope this is clear and thanks for everybodys help.
Eh?
That doesn't make any sense to me. I've just downloaded the file from Chuck's link (even though I don't need it myself). It's definitely an executable file (FileFormatConverters.exe) and not a zip.

Ensure that you're clicking on the blue, rectangular 'Download' button, a short way below the words 'On this page'.

Oh, I'm beginning to understand now.

Try saving the attachment to somewhere on your hard drive (e.g. to your Desktop or to 'My Documents'). Then go to its location and double-click on its icon. If that doesn't work, try right-clicking on the icon, selecting 'Open with' and then 'Excel'.
Question Author
Still can not open.

Once I have 'saved target as' it is saving it as a folder inside which are additional folders entitled '-rels', 'docProps' and 'xl'. Inside these are other folders call '-rels' (again), 'PrinterSettings', 'themes', and 'Worksheets', Inside each of these are documents. I have tried opening all of them but can not find the excel document. :0(
Is the document confidential? If not, email the file (or forward the whole email, including the attachment) to [email protected]

I'll try to open it (using a recent version of Excel), save it in a form which your PC can recognise, then email it back to you.

If you go back to the folder you saved the xlsx file in and then right click on it and select open with, then choose default program, then from the list that comes up find and select excel, make sure there is a tick in always use this program at the bottom and click OK and the file should open up in excel for you. (and work in the future just by double clicking on it)
Question Author
Buenchico, thank you for your offer to open for me but document is confidential, I could get the sack if falls in to the wrong hands.

ChuckFickens, when right clicking I do not get an 'open with' option. I have 'open' or 'save as target'. If I save as target I can then click thorough the folders until I get documents when there I can 'open as' I'm doing that but it's still not opening properly.

GOOD NEWS, I've managed to get someone to resend it to me in an older version.

Thank you, everyone, for all your help.
