DVD's on PC

Hi what software do I need to load up DVD's on to my PC so I can watch them I would also like to buy a multimedia external Hard drive, can anybody reccomend a good one or specification.

vlc media player is free and not resource hungry like Windows media player. Also it can handle more video types than WMP.

I've just downloaded it it seems great and really easy to use which is good cause I'm a bit of a thicko I just need to work out how to save the film on my hard drive now and I'll be sorted.
