Vaio VGN Z7500 loses charge

I have the above laptop. If I charge it up and shut it down and leave it for a week and start it up again, I find that the battery has discharged. I am definitely shutting it down, not putting it in sleep mode. I searched using Google and it seems that a lot of people have the same problem, but no solution except to remove the battery from the computer.
It's very annoying.
Any ideas?
