Who Invented Broadband?

Who or what company invented Broadband and when? By Broadband, I don't necessarily mean the term, but rather the underlying technology and the means to use it. I've heard it was BT, but I really can't see that as being true, since the US and especially Japan are so far ahead in terms of Broadband technology compared to the UK and most of Europe.

Broadband is simply a term used to express a fast connection to the internet. There are several technologies involved. I'm not sure about the states or Japan but in the UK, ADSL, SDSL, Cable, Satellite and Wireless broadband are available. Each having different 'inventors'.
