I've just bought a wireless laptop and am now trying to set it and my exisiting PC, on a wireless broadband network. I'm with AOL, the router/modem is a Speedtouch/Thomson ST585 V6 - everything works until you remove the yellow Ethernet cable, then the internet goes down. It's telling me that the router can't detect the wireless connection in my laptop. The wireless function appears to be enabled and working properly - I've enabled it and it's got a green light. I'm a bit stuck - the router and the laptop just don't seem to be speaking to one another - any ideas ?

Try turning off any wi fi security on the router and see if that helps. Temporarily turning off wi fi security will remove that from the equation and it may start working.

Mind you, if you have just set the router up then wi fi security may not be on.

If wi fi security IS on then maybe you have a different setting on the router to that on the wi fi in the laptop.
You can also try the router off for a few minutes and then connecting it again. it may be a synchronisation problem with the router.
Two good answers there - all I would add is check your network connection for the wifi, and in the wireless network connection properties, click on TCP/IP, then properties, and under the General tab make sure that the option to Obtain IP Address Automatically is enabled, then try re-connecting.
