Info Stealer Virus Advice

Hi, I wonder if anyone can give me some advice.

I have a virus in my pc called "infostealer". This is causing my pc to do some strange things e.g. bringing up a different letter to the key that I have typed on the keyboard.

I run Norton Anti Virus which has identified the virus during a scan but wont seem to remove it. I also scan with adaware but this won't even pick up the virus.

I visited a local computer shop and they advised me to save my files onto a disk and they would wipe the harddrive back to factory settings.

Can anyone give me any further advice on this, and is it possible to wipe the harddrive myself?

Jeez, that's a bit drastic. Why not try removing it first before you gut your machine?
