Yes you can. Just unplug the cable from your Sky box and plug it into the FreeSat box. Both use the same signals from the Astra cluster of satellites co-located at 28.2 degrees E.
Be aware though that some retailers (Curry and Comet) are VERY sniffy about selling a box without also conning you out of the installation fee - if you already have a Sky dish then you don't need installation.

Also if you had sky plus fitted they put in a 4way LNB on the dish at least they did my son he then connected his freesat to one of the spares on the dish

By connecting to SKY Dish will you get SKY Programmes?

Err, Unsureme, NO. The "Sky" (digital) dish gets all the signals from the Astra cluster of satellites located at 28.2 degrees East. The satellites are owned and run by Astra, not Sky, Sky just use some of the transmitting capability - not all the channels on "Sky" are from Sky!! The old Sky analog service used signals from a different cluster of satellites co-located at 19.2 degrees East. It is the box connected to the signals that determines what channels/services are available to be viewed.
By using a SKY box and viewing card/subscription you will get the Sky exclusive channels (like Sky1,2,3 etc) and other SUBSCRIPTION and ENCODED channels (UK TV/Flextech channels for example) with the Sky EPG.
ALL the other channels transmitted in the clear ("Free to view") are receivable via FreeSat, along with some which are EXCLUSIVE to FreeSat, like ITV-HD!
