AGV is very good. make sure you sign up for updates also.

AVG IS very good. I run it along with Spybot S & D and Ad-aware, but to get updates from AVG pro, you have to pay for it.

Automatic update functionality is available in avg free edition
I used AVG but it was getting too big and slow. A virus scan on my pc took 2hrs. Currently use Avira on 1 machine (although the free version doesn't check emails) and Comodo Internet Suite (free) on the other (XP or greater) http://antivirus.comodo.com/
