ps3 problem

my son's ps3 does not register any games or dvd's,
does anyone know what the problem might be and is there anything he can do to put it right himself?

not much you can do if it is faulty but i would first try and clean the laser it may just be dust on the lens you can buy a cleaing disk from say wh simth and i think i've seem them in asdas?
