mini ipod help please

i've bought an ipod from ebay. I've never had one before and it seems in good condition - no obvious signs of being dropped - but it sort of rattles, as if there is something loose-ish inside. Is this just the way they are?
Also, can you use regular headphones or do they need to be ipod ones?
There are no instructions and the seller is being quite unhelpful!

Yes, you can use any headphones you want. Apple's a pretty good though for included headphones.

And no, they don't usually rattle. Doesn't sound good to me.
