Try switching everything off at the plug - modem, router (if you have one) and pc(s).
Wait a couple of minutes and turn back on in this EXACT order:
Modem - wait 30 seconds
Router - wait...
Pcs
This often 'resets' everything and cures hiccoughs. Give it a go before delving in to anything else

Thanx Ethel I have tried all of that the modem and router appear to be ok as the computer shows *Connection Streghth excellent* the problem seems to be that virgin cut your connection if there has been no activity for a few mins.
so its ok if you are downloading stuff but when you stop and want to send an email or connect to another site you have to re-connect all over again...

The connection strength you refer to is simply your pc to the router. You'd get that even if the modem was switched off.
I am wondering if you have some some sort of 'idle disconnect' setting somewhere.
*thinking*

...who were you with before virgin?
maybe there is some software left behind?
"disconnect when idle" is how the old modems/internet worked - it does effect the new adls and broadband
...by default routers do not disconnect when idle
more than likely some idiot setting in IE
make sure all the lansettings in IE tools / connections are ticked to automatic - remove any dialup/adsl settings
select never dial a connection
restart and see what happens
