orange livebox wifi

I am having trouble getting a wireless connection on my laptop which has a belkin wireless g notebook network card, I have got a cabled connection at the moment so I can at least get on the internet. The computer symbol on the bottom right of the screen has a small yellow circle moving from side to side and when I put my cursor over it its status says it's aquiring network address, I don't know what that means. Another thing is when I go to control panel and click on the belkin symbol it is asking for a WEP key and I don't know where to find it. I have been on to orange and all they can suggest is to try another wireless enabled laptop to check whether it is the livebox that is at fault but I don't have another computer of any kind, so if anyone has any ideas of what I can do next I will be extremely grateful. I have been to the tech guys at pc world and they couldn't help except trying another computer. Thanks Kath.

Your WEP key is on a sticker on the underside of the Livebox. It will be 26 letters/numbers in groups of 4 plus 2 at the end.

Hi camioneur, thanks for your reply but I have already tried that security code and it doesn't work, I think I need the WEP key for the belkin but I can't find one anywhere. I will have to get in touch with belkins helpline. Kath

just in case you haven't tried this, before you put the key in you have to press the "1" button on the Livebox and it stays connectable for about 5 minutes. It won't work if you don't!

The only thing with a number 1 on it is the ethernet cable socket on the livebox, do you mean for me to press the wifi button which is on the bottom of the unit? By the way, do you have an orange livebox? Kath

yes i have one kath, the buttons are on the opposide side of the livebox to the orange logo near the bottom just above a USB slot. there are 2 buttons close together marked 1 and 2. if not you have a differnet livebox to me, mines about 1 year old, never had any problems with it except the wep key can be tricky first time.

Hi again camioneur, your livebox sounds like it is one of the old models. I was messing about trying to connect my belkin and I lost my internet connection completely, I had to ring orange and it took 1hr 10mins before I got the connection back so I am not going to mess about anymore. My son is coming on saturday with his wifi laptop so I will wait until then. Bye, Kath.

When I first got my Orange Livebox I had a similar problem. Every pc in the house connected like a dream, except my laptop, it just kept saying "no network in range". The solution for me was to go into network connections, disable the wireless connector, wait a minute or two before enabling it again - and hey presto! That might not sort your problem, but it's worth a try, and there's nothing to lose.

Thanks wilmay, I will try that so keep your fingers (and everything else humanly possible) crossed. I will report back at some point. Thanks, Kath.

Hi wilmay, well I got my hopes up, then I had them cruelly dashed - it didn't work, so now I am going to ring Belkin support team and they should get me sorted. Thanks again to both yourself and camioneur for taking the trouble to try and help me. Kath.
