Micro SD card adaptor on a LG phone. Help please!!!

Hi all!
Just about tearing our hair out here as we have bought an SD card adaptor for my husbands LG KE500 so that he can store more songs on the MP3 player bit of the phone. It is 2GB.
Now we have the songs on the SD card but for some reason when we insert the micro SD card and go into the external drive on the phone there is nothing there!!! However when the card goes into the computer it is showing all the songs but again once it is in the phone they have vanished!!
Do we need to format the card on the phone first?

Please anyone any help is greatfully received as it has done our heads in for the past 4 hours!!!

just a PS...

We can film a video on the phone and store it on the micro SD card and play it back, it just seems to be the music that doesn't do anything.
