text via laptop ??

I've been told I can send a text via my laptop - Is this correct? and where do I go ? how do I do it?

i've gone on the pages i think it might be but no joy. Can someone pull me into this century??

To mobile phones? I do it through Skype, and it appears as if it is being sent from my mobile phone. Replies are sent to my mobile, not Skype.
