(20:49 on Sat 10/Nov/07) iPhones from different carriers are locked to that carrier, so the answer is no, not out of the box, BUT you could SIM-unlock/get it SIM-unlocked. The lock has been cracked (looks like up to fw v.1.1.1, uk 1.1.2) and people are selling them on ebay, and there is also a shop on oxford street in London who claim to do it for a sum and it works and doesnt need to be activated with AT&T, check their FAQ on (google for iphoneunlockuk), you can call them and explain/ask advice before you commit cash to this idea.

Good luck and perhaps let me know how you get on? I would love an iPhone two, I could abolish my Nano and have a browser on my phone, w000t!

(21:16 on Sat 10/Nov/07) It will work if you get it "unlocked".

==But===

if you then update the firmware (regular updates come from apple) after its been unlocked you'll kill it (brick it).

Dont really want to go into the ins and outs of it but dont do it.

(01:52 on Sun 11/Nov/07) Well, writing it from iPhone I can say the only way for now to unlock UK ones is to downgrade them to 1.1.1 But don't worry, in few days people on the Internet will find a simple and free solution to unlock any existing iPhone. My one is still locked because I don't like O2, but as you can see I can use it for the Internet without any problem. AB Ed, you can now advertise the AnswerBank is iPhone and iPod touch ready. Plus it looks even nicer with those rounded text boxes and buttons. Stay tuned.

(16:56 on Sun 11/Nov/07) Don't get it unlocked.

Just go to your local O2 and buy one, on one of their contracts. You'll get the official updates when they're out, and life will be easier.

(21:16 on Sun 11/Nov/07) fo3nix: what if seare doesn't want a new o2 contract for whatever months at 30-45....?! I would do it and f*ck apple updates and the video voicemail, you dont necessarily need either of them, and if you join a forum you'll get all the crack update news there anyway, and people will keep cracking as long as iphones can be locked. Maybe get your phone insured aswell....youll get the kudos at value for money, and something fancy to show for your trip to USA.

Even if you arnt happy after X amount of time, sell it on eBay, itll still be early enough for a year and "sim free, unlocked" when you sell it so you'll probably make money on the USA price with the strong pound vs dollar rate now anyway.

Do what you want after educating yourself and working out the logic and planning exit routes.
