Does anyone know what sort of phone number this is?

My mobile phone has recorded a call from this number and I don't want to ring back in case it's one of the premium rate numbers.

Thats very close to the internation format for writing a phone number but its how the mobiles pick them up.

+44 means England. +1 is Canada and the US, +47 is Norway etc.

If you replace the +44 with a 0 then you can dial that number from any phone in the UK and you'll get through.

The number typed is exactly what's shown on my phone, including the asterisk. That's partly what was confusing me.
