Why use Hotmail? It's a total joke anyway.

GMX is far better. Simply set up a new account here:
https://www.gmx.co.uk/
Then use the Mail Collector facility to get mail from your Hotmail account automatically forwwared to your GMX one (so you'll only have to log into one account and you won't miss anything sent to your old address).

Once everyone whom you actually want to receive mail from is aware of your new address you can simply disable the Mail Collector and just use your GMX address.

^^^ forwwared ????

Forwarded! (and I've not touched a drop yet, honestly!)
I see a lot of argument against Hotmail but I have never had a problem with it, it gets rid of all the spam into the junk folder where it is deleted after 10 days.
But as said, just open another email account and use that.
I run two e mail addresses. My private one I only give to totally trusted people or organisations.

The other I use for competition entries and shopping from places I feel unsure of. That one gets any junk flung my way.
I switched to GMX following recommendation a year or so ago and almost never get any junk emails. For some reason though there appears not to be an app available to get gmx on my Moto G2 phone. I have to use gmail to act as the collector to view gmx emails via that. Also if I delete emails on the laptop the email remains on the phone or vice versa, meaning I have to delete twice. Somehow I think there must be something I'm doing wrong. Apart from this, I can recommend GMX even though when I give anyone my email address, they have never heard of GMX
don't change it, just set up a new one.
For Countrykid:

>>> Also if I delete emails on the laptop the email remains on the phone or vice versa, meaning I have to delete twice

That suggests that you've got your email app set up to use POP3 instead of IMAP.. Perhaps you need to investigate further?

>>> when I give anyone my email address, they have never heard of GMX

GMX is run by 1&1, which is one of the world's largest internet companies, employing over 7000 people and providing webhosting to many major international businesses. However because 1&1 is based in Germany (rather than in the UK or USA) and not associated with search engines (as Yahoo is) or linked to Microsoft (as Hotmail is), GMX still seems to be little known here.
. . . and

Many thanks for the gmx app link. Have now downloaded it. Not sure how I go about the changing gmail email app settings from pop3 to imap but will find out. Vaguely remember there being options at the time but didn't really understand etc.......! Really appreciate your tech help.
