I bought myself a new laptop in December 2016 that runs Windows 10. For the most part everything is hunky-dory but I'm a little surprised that I haven't had any Windows updates since the initial setting up, is this normal? On Windows 7 I seemed to get updates quite frequently.

It may be doing them when you have switched off Sapele. To check for updates go into Update and security and Check for updates. Yo will also find defender in there that will tell you that you are up to date, let you scan, and to look for any "threats" detected.
To get to system and security,

Click on the windows icon(4 little panes)bottom left of screen, or press the windows icon key bottom left on keypad.
From the pop up menu, click on the little cog wheel symbol(if you hover the cursor over it, it will say settings)
Left click cog and scroll down to System and Security,
Click on System & Security and yo have a menu on the left.
Click on windows update and check for updates.
You can get your lap top to upgrade at set times using the menu
Active Hours.
You can check your security status by clicking on Windows Defender then open windows defender.
Ta Sam. hope all is good your end.
