Could someone please tell me how set up a category on the kindle as I have rather a lot of authors that I want to put in to categories.

You've not told us which version of the Kindle you've got and that might be relevant. (I'm not a Kindle user, so I can't be sure). However googling suggests that it's the 'collections' feature which you need, with this providing instructions for the Kindle Paperwhite:
