Good evening

All I have ever had is this cheap & cheerful tablet, which is now showing it's age

But now I have bought a (reconditioned) HP stream 14" laptop, webcam, bluetooth, HDMI, windows 10, etc etc ... and I cannot seem to figure out how to create those little icon shortcuts for my home screen - - is anyone able to help please?

Right click and the program/ app/ file you wish to make a shortcut for and the option should appear in the list of things to do.

Right click where? -- I have the search engine on screen now
To make a desktop shortcut to a PROGRAM, go to Start > All Programs (or whatever Windows 10 now calls it), right-click on the program name and select Send To > Desktop (Create Shortcut).

To make a desktop shortcut to a WEB PAGE then, if you're using Internet Explorer or something like Firefox, the 'regular' way of doing it still works in Windows 10. i.e. go to the relevant web page, reduce the size of your browser window (so that you can see some of the desktop as well) and drag the icon immediately to the left of where it says 'www' (in the address bar) onto your desktop.

However if you're using Edge that won't work though. Instead you need to use Option Three here:

Little icon bottom left 4 pane window, or the key on your laptop again bottom left. Opens your menu. Different layout but not unlike w7.

Not following at all "drag icon"? "www in address bar"?

I am a complete neanderthal, and the language you are using suggests I possess knowledge - which I don't

I shall go to a chap in a local computer repair outlet and ask him to show me . . . but thank you anyway
The address bar is at the top of the page. When you open a web page it will automatically show in the bar www&c. To the left of www is what looks like a sheet of paper. As Chris says, first reduce your screen size by clicking on the box at the very top right, just before the x. Then left click on that piece of paper just before www, hold it down and drag the cursor to the the desk top then release. You can then maximize your screen size and your icon will be saved on the desktop.
