Can anyone help please? I am an elderly computer user, not terribly tech minded but usually not too bad. So that I don't have to worry about viruses in future, I am trying to replace my desktop computer with a MacBook Pro. However, when I try to get my emails on my MacBook they won't arrive if they've already come to the old computer. It's ok with hotmail. I can get those emails on all my devices (including iPad and iPhone). My server is Plusnet who can't seem to help and I use Thunderbird as a mail programme on my desktop. Does anyone have a solution to this please?

Thunderbird may be removing emails from the server when downloading them. To set Thunderbird to leave a copy on the server see here

Email can be accessed 2 ways by Thunderbird.

One way is POP - when you check it that way, the message is taken from the email server and then stored on whichever computer you used to check the mail.

The other is IMAP. With this you are actually looking at the message on the email server. Thus if you look at the message with computer A and then look again with computer B you will see the message and you will see that you have read it.

You can have the messages left in the server if you are using POP as described in the link provided by Bertrum.

If you follow thw instructions there for accessing the account settings, take a look and let us know if it says POP or IMAP

As for your hotmail, you are using the third option for email which is webmail - think of that as a relatives phone number - that doesn't change, but you can call it from any phone - you can use any computer to access webmail.

You can also setup your phone and ipad to get your email - use the imap settings.

If you're not sue how to do that, let us know who you get your email from (you say Plusnet - they're giving you internet, do they give you email as weel?)

We can then find the settings for you.

Thank you Both for your help.
I followed the instructions from Bertrum and it seems okish.
The desktop says POP mail server whereas the MacBook and iPad say IMAP. I have a mail account from plus net (although it is actually force.9 or f.9). I also have a business email address that is hosted by server.excelwebhosting.co.uk.
You can setup the desktop as imap - just go through the process of adding an account.

You can also set up your business address as well if it gives imap settings. If you have already used the Mail app on the ipad and iphone, you can get other mail apps from the appstore and use them as well.
