After some more 'head scratching' I think I may have figured out what settings you may changed to 'lose' your Desktop. So, try this:- - Click 'Windows Start' button - Select 'Settings' - Select 'System' - Select 'Tablet Mode' - In the Window 'Tablet Mode' C'lick the Blue Icon with a White dot' (status showing as 'On') that is located under the text 'Make Windows...

By saying 'I went back to my plain laptop screen' do you mean that you installed Windows 10 and then uninstalled back to Windows 7 and in doing so have now lost the desktop icons?
On the same theme, I am fed up with Win 10 and would like to go back to Win 8.1. Can I do this, and if so, how?

No pinkyboyid,I just installed Windows 10 from the icon on my taskbar that was given to me by Microsoft.
I was originally on Windows 7 and had my icons then.

Thankyou for your help much appreciated.
@Jackdaw33....As I understand matters, you have 30days from installing Windows 10 to revert to your previous Operating System.

The following Youtube link, may assist you. :-

Thanks, Hans, Too late now (sob).
Can you see any icons on your Desktop? For example 'Recycle Bin'?

If you can see a 'Recycle Bin' icon 'double-click' on it to open and check if your missing Desktop icons are listed in there. If they are listed in there then RIGHT-click each one and select the option 'Restore' to place them back on the 'Desktop'.
@Jackdaw33.....I also shed a tear for you. Let's hope that Microsoft irons-out all the faults with W 10 and issues sufficient update patches to make W10 something really special.

I think MS will eventually sort-out all problems with W10. However we must be patient. Hence the reason for my waiting a few further months before taking the step of up-dating to an Operating System which, in my opinion, hasn't really been fully tested on a worldwide basis.

No pinkyboyidIa have no recycle bin at all, only google chrome, microsoft store, windows media player, norton & skype all in the task bar.

Thankyou for your help much appreciated.
Ok. Lets see if you can reactivate and display the missing 'Recylce Bin' icon on the Desktop:-

- Click 'Windows Start' button
- Select 'Settings'
- select 'Personalization'
- Select 'Themes'
- Select 'Desktop icon settings'
- Click 'Recycle Bin' to put a 'tick' in the check box (That is assuming it does not already have a tick!)
- Click 'Ok'

Close all the open windows and return to your desktop. Do you see a 'Recycle bin' icon now? If so double-click it to see if there are any desktop icons in there as per previous info.
Question Author
pinkyboyid I did as you told me and got to the themes window and yes there was a tick next to the recycle bin,and in the box there was two recycle bins one full and one empty and I followed the rest of your suggestions, but no recycle bi on the laptop screen worse luck.

Thankyou for your help much appreciated
If you 'RIGHT-click' in a blank area of the task bar that runs along the bottom of the screen you should see a menu pop-up.

From that menu select the option 'Show the desktop' and now do you see any icons on the desktop?
The following may hopefully restore your icons based on the assumption that you may have inadvertently 'hidden' them:-

- RIGHT-Click on a blank area of the Desktop
- On the menu that appears select 'View'
- Click the option 'Show desktop icons'

Do the icons display now?

pinkyboyid when I right click on a blank area of the task bar i get these notices come up: show app icons which is ticked then show all notifications icons which is ticked, then show touch keyboard button and then show language switcher.
And when I right click on a blank screen nothing appears

Thankyou for your help much appreciated pinkyboyid
Hmm, not sure what pop-up menus you are seeing.

Are you sure that you are mouse RIGHT-clicking on an Empty Desktop area, as opposed to the usual LEFT-Click ?

- Select 'Tablet Mode'
- In the Window 'Tablet Mode' C'lick the Blue Icon with a White dot' (status showing as 'On') that is located under the text 'Make Windows more touch-friendly'. Doing so should change its status to 'Off' and then as if by magic your Desktop should be returned to normal (Hopefully!)
