Home Phone Problem

I have a Siemens Gigaset home phone, hands-free with a base station which is plugged into the mains. It's worked perfectly for about 5 years, but the other morning the phone rang, I picked up the handset and nothing happened, it just kept ringing. No problem with the line (I've checked with another phone), but now the handset just flashes 'Base'. I've fiddled about with it to no avail, and all the instruction book says about it is that it will flash 'Base' when the handset is too far from the base station, which it isn't. I keep resetting the date/time etc but I still can't get it back to how it should be. Any ideas, please?

Sometimes taking the battery out (if it has one) or switching off at the mains for 5 minutes can clear these kind of problems.

Many thanks for your responses. Had a look at the website and have been doing a lot more fiddling about, but it's not back to normal, and it won't always let me dial out. Ach. Have found a similar phone at Argos for £20, so I think it'll have to be that, as it's driving me up the wall!
Try Benchico's suggestion first before you spend money replacing it.
