Please help, I have a standard Dell laptop (model probably not relevant) and I have a repeat problem that either when the cat walks over that area or I catch it with my hand or rest my tablet somewhere in the bottom left area the whole screen goes black and I can only restore it by shutting the lid and opening it again. Has anyone any idea what I'm touching and how to remedy it without closing lid?

Perhaps you are touching the trackpad and you have "hot corners" setup for the screen/screensaver?
