When I try to start up, the screen becomes blue with white writing.:

Checking file system on C:
The type of file system is TFS

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistancy...............You may cancel the check by pressing any key, but this does not work, even Escape. While this goes on the curser disappears. Occasionally, when I have managed to log on, after starting up using F12, the computer loses sound, and I have to start the process all over again. I`ve tried checking Hard Drive Diagnostic after starting up using F12, but it still persists. Any ideas please? help!!!

Start up your computer into safe mode, go into your control panel and run the system restore, restore your computer to the earliest date shown. Unplugging your computer whilst it is on is not advisable it will cause the check disc to run at bios. its ntfs
let it run the check dont try to stop it.see how it goes it will take a bit of time.
looks like a hard drive problem,
Don't cancel the disc checking, it may take some time.

Sounds like you pc was either improperly shut down or was shutdown by a Hardware fault.

You mention using F12, is this a Dell laptop?

If you go get it up and running the first thing I would do is make a separate backup of your Documents/Pictures/Music

It`s a Dell desktop. Running on Firefox. I`ve backed up the Docs. & Pictures. The check stops at stage 2 after 60 secs., doesn`t get to stage 3. After switching off the wall socket, and restarting using F12, it gets to the same point and then blacks out and then goes straight to the log in screen with user name.
its not unusual for it to take time to start stage 3 how long are you giving it to run at this point
run it again and leave it for about 5mins to go to 3 if it doesn't go there after that time then it looks like a reinstall of your win 7 or xp which ever your using
btw doesn't make any difference about using firefox that's just a search engine
" goes straight to the log in screen with user name. "
cant you log in ??

Hi Ivor4781,

I can log on after the steps taken above, pulling the plug and restarting, but I want to avoid all this messing about and not have the "Checking File system on C" appearing at all. I guess there is something wrong with the hard drive, do I need to have it checked or replaced do you think? Thanks for your answers.
i would just let it run till it checks it and dont keep pulling the plug out that will cause it to do this more often
if it takes more than 1 hour to do this check ,then yes you have a problem with it

Hi Methyl

I think the details you need are:

Windows XP version 2002 Service Pac 3? I have had to switch off by pulling the plug, and by normal means, but nothing improves I`m afraid.
Start up your computer into safe mode, go into your control panel and run the system restore, restore your computer to the earliest date shown.
Unplugging your computer whilst it is on is not advisable it will cause the check disc to run at bios.
The check disc can take up to an hour to complete depending on the size of your hard drive, if it completes fully and you still see the start up warnings, it is more than likely a driver or incompatible software, restoring the system returns the computer to an earlier date when your machine was working OK.
If you still have problems let me know and I will attempt to help further.
Cheers Shewy
