'Push' messages to mobile phones

Can anyone tell me what a 'push' message is please?

Push was a much hyped technology a few years ago. As opposed to people looking for things, push was marketed info sent to the user. For instance, you sign up to a website and they say tick here to get relative information. That would be a push message.

There was also WAP push which, as far as I know, sent information to your phone like a website address. Maybe pictures too. This was also marketing based information being sent to your mobile.
