I can't get the internet on my laptop

Granddad G & I each have a laptop and usually use them at the same time. For some reason I can't get the internet on mine which is one room and Granddad Gs and his lap top are in another room so he can watch the sport. I havent been on my laptop for about a week and I now I can't access the internet. I have tried rebooting but no luck.

I get the message if I use Firefox - problem loading Page - server not found and if I use Internet Explorer it says cannot display webpage - can anyone help please?

Assuming it's wireless check you've not got a little wireless switch on it you've switched off.

(stating the make and model of laptop along with version of windows on it would help answer this better)
have you tried switching router off and on lol

Hi chuck I have an emachines D620 and windowa vista homebasic
Question Author
Sorry tommy missed your post - yes I have tried that
There is a small switch for the wireless on the front of that laptop, check you've not switched it off by mistake.

There is an indicator light on the front of the machine to show if it's on or off.
can you open connect disconnect
Question Author
It is on chuck - but the light is orange and the other two lights are green -is that right? The two screens in the bottom left hand corner aren't 'linked' if you know what I mean - Sorry I'm fine when it works - but I've absolutely no idea when anything goes wrong
Question Author
Missed you again tommy - how do I do that?
If you click on the network symbol (the two screens) it should bring up a list of networks available, select your one and click connect.
click on the on off globe bottom left and click om connect to when it comes up then choose your usual provider and try to connect
Question Author
I've opened up the network symbol and it says 'unidentified (TalkTalk 520) Access: local only
Can you find your usual provider? If not find out what the other laptop is using by doing the same. Then disconnect from talk and try to connect with usual.Local access is very limited.
Question Author
The other computer says currently connected to Talktalk 520 mine also says connectd to talktalk520
try connecting to another open network. If unsuccessful return to talk talk and reconnect.dont know why but this sometimes works.A few months ago I lost my virgin connection for a few days and my neice connected me to BFTON.Now every now and again when virgin signal is weak or slow laptop tries to reconnect with BT and I have to do what you are doing now.Sorry to not be of more help.Once when I lost internet completely A nice indian gentleman took 2 hours to patiently talk me through the process, all forgotten now but there is help available out there.Dont give up.
Just to double check, as im not sure you fully understood which switch Chucky was talking about Granny, apologies if you did, it's this switch he means...

I've tried everything suggested and no luck - thank you all for your help - looks like a call to India next week
There are many domestic devices which interfere with wireless. Make sure that your laptop is nowhere near a cordless phone for example.

Try connecting directly to the router with a RJ45 Ethernet Cable (very cheap from your local computer shop or big supermarket). This will eliminate the wireless and give you a confidence check.

I suppose that there is a chance that whatever site you have chosen as your Home Page is down. Have you tried connecting to a different site?

ChuckFickens latest advice is very good. There is a known issue with Microsoft Windows Vista which is repaired by running the repair option.
Did you mention what Operating System you are running and what Anti-Virus software you have?
