laptop screen

the screen on about 50% of my laptop is not visable there is just grey and a what seems like a black crack on it.

there is no physical damage that i can feel?

i bought it in January from comet who sold it to me with extras i didn't need.when i tried getting my money back for these i had problems, but eventually did so.

i rang a local computer repair guy who was very honest i'e not seeking to make money and he said to take it back to them but he also added they will try to make out it is my fault.

i'm not good arguing face to face with them.

is there any way of fixing the fault without going to comet especially on a Saturday

sorry in advance if there is any problems with the post i can only see half the screen.

Well it sounds like the screen is physically broken, in which case it won't be covered by any guarantee.

You can try taking it back to comet, but if the screen has been broken it is your fault.

The only fix is to replace the screen, comet will charge a fortune to do this, so if you have a decent local computer repair guy probably best to take it to him.
OH and you won't feel any damage, the front of the screen is plastic, it's the one of the glass layers behind the plastic you've broken.

i did not break it or drop it etc,the said black mark now has green lines in it which it did not when i first noticed the fault(about two hours ago).

the local guy i phoned said it would cost at least £150 for a new screen, the laptop itself in a decent condition would not get that if sold.

i will try comet monday.

the problem is i have music and photos on this laptop that i cant access(i can only see the right side of the screen) perfectly to add.

if the worst happens can i get the files?
If you plug it into a monitor (or a flat screen TV with a VGA socket) and you'll still be able to use it.

It really does sound like the screen has been broken

Also what is the make and model of the laptop, £150 is expensive for a screen.

thanks chuck for your replies

its a compaq which is made through hp

i paid £300 for it brand new so it i cant imagine it being to hi spec.

hp and comet use 0844 and 0871 numbers which i cant use in my minutes.

my mum has a dell screen for a desktop computer she doesn't use,are you saying i could run my laptop through that?

to add my phone will not let me ring them im not being a cheap skate
Yes you can run the laptop through any standard PC monitor. Plug the monitor in the laptops VGA port (the blue D shapped port) and press FN + F4 to switch over to the monitor.

Just saying Compaq doesn't help identify the screen, compaq have made hundreds of laptops over the years. there will be a model number on the serial number sticker on the bottom.

when you say VGA do you mean like the lead that connects a virgin media box to a tv?

oh to add that picture is identical to what i am looking at.
If you have a separate monitor the plug on the end of its lead is likely to be a VGA connector. It's sort of D shaped. The VGA port on the laptop will fit it.
No, A VGA lead and socket looks like this and the port is on the left side of the laptop at the rear.

A replacement screen for that laptop looks like it would cost about £40-50 for the part, I wouldn't charge much more than about £30 or so to change it, it's not a big job at all.

p.s.

That wasn't an offer to do the job, but if anyone is trying to charge you more than about £100 to replace the screen IMO they are overcharging.
Question Author
thanks chuck you got me exited for a moment there!!!!!

£30

can see the port now and as i basically use the laptop as a desktop p.c problem solved hopefully
Question Author
re-posting this with an added/new question could the problem be caused by a phone being around the laptop?

looking on the internet it says that could be a cause and i often leave my phone on my laptop.

something to do with the magnetic fields.
No, nothing to do with that at all. Your LCD panel has suffered an internal failure where the connections to the chips that drive those missing grey columns (tab bonding) have failed, the only remedy is a new panel. LCDs are not affected by magnetic fields like CRTs are, nor radio waves, so whatever you read was cobblers.
