Ipod strange error message

Hi my ipod has lost all the music files although I can still see photographs. When plugging into the laptop (I'm using windows 7) it shows in iTunes but won't sync when I ask it too. Other suggestions were to restore factory settings and start again. I've just tried this and received the error message....Unable to restore as the device contains information used by another application... I have no idea what to do next..any suggestions please. It's an ipod classic 5th generation if that helps

I have yes, Gone through all of them. I've also formatted it through my computer and tried to sync again and now get a different error message..The ipod cannot be synched. The required file cannot be found
