google search results

what does it mean when the first few ads are highlighted in the results page? Someone told me not to click on them as they cost small companys money and business but i didn't hear the explanation.

It means that the sites shown have paid to be associated with the words that you have typed into Google.

Yes. They pay Google some money if you click on their advert and if the adverts are on sites like this, Google than pay the site owner some money.
