Using skype and getting rid of BT line?

I wonder if anyone has done this, and what their experience has been? I seem to be pouring lots of money into BT coffers and I wondered how life would be without a BT line.
Aside from £10 a month better off, which is the obvious.....

Well, you'd still have to pay someone (probably BT) a line rental fee and you'd need to consider what download allowance you get from your ISP but it could work as long as everyone you talk to has access to Skype.

I often speek to far away family over Skype/Facetime instead of using the phone now.

How long is a piece of string?

The variables are many - how many people you talk to regularly have access to Skype and would wish to use it inst4ad of a land line or mobile?

If you use your phone rarely to talk to one person who is up for Skype, then the saving will be worthwile - if you speak to loads of people and the drop-outs and absence os signals are a problem, then it's not worth the grief.

I only use Skype to communicate with the present Mrs Hughes while she is working abroad, but at home we use our land line or mobiles.

You need to assess your communications requirements, together with those with whom your interqact, and make an informed decision from there.

I don't have a landline and haven't had for at least 8 years. I use Skype for most of my calls, I have a Skype in number so people can call me on Skype from their landline or mobile at normal rates and I also have a special Skype phone that works exactly like a dect phone, that is not reliant on my pc being switched on.
Don't miss a landline.

I do have Virgin cable broadband though - every other ISP requires a landline.
Clive, my phone rings exactly the same as a normal phone, and if I am using my pc I have an alert there, too.

Most of my incoming calls at the present are from 'David' from 'Microsoft Support', or 'regarding my claim', or similar sh1te......
If you took away your BT line would you not then lose your broadband?
Not if Mosaic has cable broadband.

I pay £2.24 per month for free calls to UK landlines and my SkypeIn number

HC is correct - I have a fibroptic cable already, not from BT
