Laptop not recognising when i put disc in

My acer laptop doesnt recognise that i have put a disc in , so when i go into 'my computer' and double click on the 'DVD RW drive (D)' a box pops up and tells me to insert a disc , even though one is already in it. I am wondering if i have deleted any files that could cause this .

It is unlikely that you have managed to delete a program causing the disc not to be recognised.

My bet would be that there is a fault with the disc drive – quite probably the laser module. Beg, borrow or steal an external disc-drive and try that. If you must have an optical drive on your laptop, it may be cheaper to use a USB connected drive, compared with the purchase price of a replacement drive.

Thanks hymie for yr ans , gives me food for thought.
You could consider a replacement via ebay, if you are sure that what is being offered is compatible with your laptop.

or you could try cleaning the little plastic laser diod that you can see when you open the draw, i have used compact disk cleaner or spectacle cleaner fluid, or Isopropyl alcohol on an earbud.
