Compact or Compaq? Also how old is the PC and what operating system is it running (Windows XP, 7, VISTA)?
unplug everything for mains, take off the side panel of pc check all cables are connected then check all the pc cards graphics card if there is one sound card again if there is one and any other card, a gentle push on the card to make sure there not unseated in there slots, including the memory cards, also try another mains outlet, also while you have the side panel off, get you hoover out and have a gentle hoover around the psu grills to make sure there's no debris dust build up etc.
Sound like a failing power supply to me. Either 5V or 12V rail isn't coming up properly each time. Get it changed, they are cheap as chips nowadays anyway.
