Do I need to buy new printer

I used to have windows xp and had hp printer. I now have Windows 7 and is not accepting the printer. I can get another HP printer that says compatible for xp and upwards .I suppose I need to get another printer .Is that right as my old printer says compatible up to xp and not xp upwards.
