Improved toaster

About 30 or more years ago, we had a toaster that worked by detecting the heat given off by the bread - at least that's how I think it worked. It definitely did not work off a timer, and it promised that your second pair of slices would be just as brown as the first, whereas ordinary toasters tend to burn the second pair because the toaster is already hot.
I think that the brand was Westminster, and it was made in the USA. Has anybody heard of such a thing and does anybody know if I can still buy one? [Googling 'westminster' brings up stuff in London.]

Pretty sure it couldn't have worked by measuring the heat given off by the bread as:

(a) That would have been overwhelmed by the heat given off by the elements,
and
(b) Toast turns brown as a result of heat over time, so simply heating the bread a given temperature would not be enough - you need to heat it to a temperature for a certain amount of time (which will vary according to the type of bread, the moisture in it, etc, etc.)

I would also like a toaster which fully does a normal slice instead of the top hanging out and not toasting at all, but at the same time will also allow you to get crumpets out etc without getting third degree burns.

Well said BOO it is so annoying have just done mine for my bacon, I tend to put the top end back in then the rest ends up too well done.

I bought a 4 slice toaster with a long slot to take 4 slices. It takes two slices on edge so no white bit hanging out, swan brand

Does it do crumpets without you losing the ends of your fingers trying to get the bloody things out again?

Can I add that there was some sort of detector on one side (you had to put whatever you were toasting in that side if you were only using one slot). It looked like the transistors of about 40 or 50 years ago (before microchips), about 5x4x3 mm. There were also two controls for browning - one underneath for coarse adjustment, and one on the side for fine tuning.
