Hi.

I have a mini iPod and I was wondering how come when I switch it off and then go back to it days later that the battery has run down a bit? I thought that by holding down the down button for a few secs switched it off totally. Does this only switch it to standby? and if so how do you switch it off so the battery doesn't go down so quick?

Sorry if this is a really silly question, but it's puzzling me.

(21:11 on Thu 12/May/05) This is not a silly question at all. Basically what happens is the ipod will still use energy when it is turned off to maintain the data on the hard drive. Therefore if you don;t use ti for a long time it will almost be dead. Hope this answers your question.

Ahh right.. I just didn't expect it to use so much energy that I would notice it going down like that over a few days.

(12:02 on Fri 13/May/05) This is probably a stupid answer but do you know about the sleep mode? If you dont you could do this by going to the main 'iPod mini' menu and then by holding down the play/pause button for a few seconds.

I have tried that before but it seems to be the same as holding down the down button for a few secs, although admittedly I haven't left it a few days using this method maybe it doesn't use as much battery, I'll give it a go :o)

(18:18 on Sat 14/May/05) Here's a question then. Why does the iPod Mini need power in order to maintain the data that is stored on the hard drive? I'm not expert when it comes to hard drives, but I was under the impression that, given the fact the hard drive in any iPod is physical in nature and, unlike RAM in a PC for instance, not volatile, then it should not require any power at all in order to retain data.

You can remove a hard drive from a PC for years, put it back in and it will still have the data it had on it when it was taken out. So how does this work then?

I have a 20g iPod, and when it is switched off it keeps some function running (eg the clock) and also reatins information aboiut which songs I have played in temporary memory, and after about 10 days it will be out of battery, if I were to ever not use it for 10 days. The info about which tunes I have played gets written back to the hard drive when I plug it into my computer.
