old games in compatability mode

I have a couple of oldish games which used to play on xp, but now when i play them in windows 7 under compatability program the game plays but in basic 256 colours. yet when it 1st starts it looks fine and when i quit it reverts briefly back to ideal. any ideas as to what i can do to rectify this please
